Iowa STEM Symposium
Participants in this event included 150 middle school students, 17 middle school teachers, and 30 community partners and many scientists. Kids chose one of four thematic areas and twenty seven different activities. Sample activities: CSI-like investigation of a food born illness, test drive with the National Driving Simulator; manipulation of Virtual Soldier.
Teachers were able to talk to community partners and scientists about their needs, barriers to education, and ways community partners can to help them. Among those listening were representatives of business, government, and colleges/universities. A number of partnerships were initiated as a result.
